Sunrise to Paradise: The Story of Mount Rainier National Park
Published in Hardcover by University of Washington Press (June, 1900)
Average review score:

Appeals to both mind and eye.Years ago I hiked at Mt. Rainier, took pictures in its flower meadows, and slid in its summer snow. I thought someday I'd climb its glaciers to the summit, 14, 410 feet. That never happened. But this book brings back all the old impressions and delights-and adds to them. Lots of photos (280!). Lot of information, most of it new to me. Richard P. Kratz, M.D. Clinical Professor, Ophthalmology Univ. California, Irvine

Surprising Gift: The Story of Holden Village, Church Reviewal Center
Published in Paperback by Holden Village Pr (June, 1987)
Average review score:

Good overview of the history of Holden VillageHolden Village is perhaps the most remote retreat center in the contiguous 48 States. It was built as a mining village by the Howe Sound Corportation of Seattle and operated as one of the largest copper mines in the United States from 1937 to 1957. This book tells the story of how the mining village was donated to the Lutheran church and how it became a retreat center. The book chronicles the philosophy of Holden and how the village strives to find God and His presence in our daily lives. If you are interested in finding out more about a community with no phones, no television, and no radio, this book will give you a nice introduction at a very reasonable price.

Tally's Corner
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (June, 1968)
Average review score:

RELEVANT THEN...RELEVANT NOW...This study of Black streetcorner men by noted anthropologist, Dr. Elliot Liebow, was his doctoral dissertation. It became recognized as one of the more important sociological treatises, at the time it was written; a time during which Blacks or African Americans were still referred to as Negroes. Dr. Liebow's year and a half long study of a group of disaffected Black males, who routinely frequented a streetcorner in Washington, D.C.'s inner city, provided the basis for the dissertation that gave rise to this book. His analysis of this particular societal subculture, in the context of the overall social milieu in which it exists, is still relevant today. While scholarly, the book is written in an engaging conversational tone, which makes for easy reading. This book should be read by all those with an interest in the social sciences.

Time Out Washington, Dc (Time Out Guides)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (09 October, 2001)
Average review score:

Accurate, informative, and very helpfulI just moved to DC, and I was really lost here until I picked up this thing. The reviewers selected great activities, restaurants, places, etc. Each one I have tried has been worth my time, if not really outstanding. I've asked long-time locals about some of the highly recommended but low-profile places, and they have agreed that those are hot spots. The maps are very nice, and the style is extremely readable. If you need one guide to the city, this is as good a choice as any.

Touring Seattle by Bicycle
Published in Paperback by Terragraphics (December, 1991)
Average review score:

The Best! Terrain Maps, Calculated time, and Calorie Count! This is the most comprehensive guide that I have ever seen. I believe that all route books should follow the design and style of this. It definitely puts all others to shame. It is even small enough to carry in your bike bag or pocket. This book is a MUST!
